Even though it was a struggle for me to finally come to terms with moving to Nairobi from Mombasa-mostly because of having to change everything around me- I have come to learn that it was definitely for a good cause; as I have not only grown in all areas of my life but I have also been exposed to different cultures. However, having been born and raised in Mombasa was one of the best things about my childhood.

Here I share with you some of the finest and adventurous places at the Coast that are a must-go whenever you plan to visit.

Tamarind Dhow-at the Tamarind Village (Mkomani, Mombasa)

The Tamarind Dhow which is at the Tamarind Village and well known as ‘The floating restaurant’ is an attractive giant boat with a great concept of an in-built restaurant, attracting hundreds of tourists every season. It is located at the North Coast, in Mkomani just next to Nyali area. Every evening just before sunset, there is a tour on the Dhow, guests are invited to have dinner freshly made by top-of-the-arts chefs as they sail.

As the sun sets, and there is a smooth breeze, a live bland is there to entertain guests with cultural songs and dances. Imagine all that in the middle of the ocean! They also have a refreshing tropical drink brewed by their very own called ‘Dawa’- nothing tastes better as you sail into the sunset.

Wasini Island (South Coast, Mombasa)

The beautiful island of Wasini lies at the South Coast of Mombasa, off the Coast of the Indian Ocean. What captivated me the most is the spectacular architecture and the generally cool, relaxing atmosphere in the area. Walking is their main mode of transport, which in my opinion is perfect since -Who doesn’t want to experience what each foot step feels like down there?

The citizens give off such great warmth to guests as they carry on with their daily activities. There are great fun activities to take part in, including Snorkeling, Scuba Diving and Dolphin Spotting, not to mention the scrumptious seafood while you’re at it! The shores have a wide area of coral, which encouraged them to construct several footpaths since they travelled on foot and move the bulky goods using wheelbarrows.

Turtle Bay Beach Hotel (Watamu)

Turtle Bay Resort is located in one of the top five beaches in the world. It is famous for its many turtles which come up to the shore to lay their eggs every evening. The hotel restaurants have a striking design with both a modern and traditional touch. What makes them stand out from the crowd is that they have set up their dining areas in the gardens which have ponds around them.

They also have a snack bar by the pool perfect for children. The hotel is family-friendly, as there is something for everyone to enjoy; additionally they are open to putting together birthday parties with a team ready to do your cake and décor!

Sunsail Hotel (Lamu)

Sunsail Hotel is literally a home away from home. Lamu is famous for its narrow streets, donkey rides (I hear there is only one car) and exquisite food-biryani, vitumbua, seafood cooked in coconut sauce- name it! Oh, don’t forget, they have an annual cultural food festival where people come together and showcase their cooking talent and everyone gets to sample the scrumptious cuisines.

Sunsail Hotel is strategically placed with a direct view of the ocean from each room. The hotel has a homely presence; they have added the old Swahili touch to their décor and furniture -beds, tables and stools. My favourite thing about Lamu is sailing, boat rides are available all day and the best photos of the town can be taken from the ocean.
