The past month has been…saying it has been a roller coaster would be quite the understatement, who would have thought we would get to a time where we are basically advised against having a social life? ‘Hellos’ have to be the most awkward they’ve been in ages, keeping a safe distance and all!
Thoughts when I heard about the curfew…‘Coming to Birth’. Anyone read that book in High School by Marjorie MacGoye Oludhe? Oh she painted the picture of the 1952 State of Emergency period in Kenya so well; and it stuck in my mind. They had a curfew back then. This book is so rich in Kenyan history, you can find a snippet here
Feelings about this season…everything has just changed. The most painful part is watching news and hearing of new victims everyday. What a mess! It’s refreshing though, that the government responded quickly to the whole matter and hopefully are doing everything to control the situation. We all need to play our part by protecting ourselves and those around us.
Are people actually working from home?…A lot of businesses have had to change up things a little bit and adapt to the current situation and working remotely is actually working for them. It’s unfortunate that there are people who have lost jobs and others not sure if they will get paid, we hope things will get better soon.
I met the smartest 9-year-old entrpreneurs…So a few days ago, I was making some protective mask deliveries to my neighbour (the masks are from @zigobags- check them out on Instagram) and I happened to meet one of the neighbour’s kids with his friends and they followed me to ask if they could sell the masks around the neighbourhood for a small commission. I was hesitant at first but I though why not? I counted the masks, packed them in a bag and briefed them on fabrics used, how they should be worn and other details and answered all the questions they had. It was a pleasant surprise when they came back a few minutes later after having sold so many. I was more excited about how determined and confident they were and how they had the spirit and will to work, be successful in their task and earn money. Needless to say, we are now besties.
Speaking of young entrepreneurs, have you heard of Ollie’s fizzies? Check out this million dollar business built by a 6-year-old here
Current best weekend activities…oh I miss the excitement of hosting once in a while. However, there are some great outlets to indulge in while indoors like trying new recipes, joining an online book club or even doing puzzles and painting especially if you have kids. It’s also the perfect time to write down your future plans be it business, investments or even just dreams. There’s just something about putting it down on paper.
Video calls be like…the norm! Honestly I’m loving those! Not sure why we don’t do much of video calling on normal days. Really enjoying talking to friends and family through video calls. Come to think of it, I think this is the longest many have stayed without meet ups with friends and family and videos feel closest to it.
Travelling…who would ever think travelling would be the last thing on anyone’s mind? One of the scariest moments was when they announced the free flight from NewYork to Kenya. I couldn’t help thinking “What is happening?”
I’m loving the…self-reflection. Discovering more about myself everyday I’m home, like when I’m most productive and how to manage my time better. I’m also looking into reading books out of my comfort zone; and currently enjoying some amazing pieces, by these Kenyan writers, see here
I encourage people to…Pray without ceasing and always have faith that things will turn around and it will get better. Always remember to be grateful in both the good and bad times; God turns bad situations into good. “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him…” James 1:12
